Hoop and Ball Selection
Buy a basketball hoop that can grow with your child. Your child should be able to reach the basket without having to struggle. As your child grows and gets stronger, continue to raise the hoop to challenge him/her. Ideally you want the child to make it in the majority of the time with the correct stance. The same is true for the ball. Each child should use a ball that is a good size. Any size ball is good for dribbling, but shooting should only be done with a ball that can be handled by the shooter. For ages 3 and above, the sizes start at a mini (size 3) and as your child grows advance the size of his/her ball. A ball too large for a beginner shooter could be detrimental to his/her shot. The next sizes would include youth or junior, then a women’s, and then a men’s size. Remember that a child can not have too many basketballs or hoops!
