Positively Support Your Basketball Child

As your child gets older, you will have the privilege of watching your child play in many games. No matter what the sport remember these thoughts:

Your child’s stats can NOT be added to your stats from when you played.

Referees are nice people and they really don’t care who wins. They are just trying to do a good job.

Never talk about another child. What comes around, goes around.

The only time something seems fair is when it is unfair to your advantage, so don’t be surprised when both teams are yelling!

When playing is no longer fun, what is the point of doing it. Help your child to keep the excitement in their sport.

Wins don’t count until you reach the varsity level in High School. In all my years of recruiting High School players, I have never asked a player how they did in little league!

Coaching is the hardest job a person could have. Coaches are aware of the strengths in each player, but it is difficult to keep all the parents happy when they believe that their child is the best. And rightfully so. Each coach tries to bring out the best in each player, so please don’t demean what the coach is trying to encourage. Be a supporter and advocate of your child.

If you want to help your child get better at a sport, do a Howard Cunningham and offer a lifesaver and pat them on the back and say “good job!” Let the coach to the correcting.
